Gemstone-infused candles are a beautiful way to bring intention and atmosphere into your space. To keep every burn safe and enjoyable, we've put together answers to the questions we hear most often — from first-time buyers to candle enthusiasts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Before You Burn
Do I need to do anything before lighting my candle for the first time?
Yes! Trim your wick to about 1/4 inch before every burn. This keeps the flame at a safe, controlled height and helps your candle burn evenly. On your very first burn, let the wax melt all the way to the edges of the jar — this usually takes 2-3 hours and prevents tunneling on future burns.
Are the gemstones safe to leave in the candle while it burns?
Our candles are hand-poured with the gemstones set into the wax, so they are intended to remain in place as the candle burns. As the soy wax melts, the stones will gradually settle toward the bottom of the jar — this is completely normal. Keep a close eye on your candle as it burns down and the stones become more exposed to the heat.
Can the heat crack or fracture my gemstones?
Natural stones can respond to heat in different ways depending on their type and any natural inclusions they contain. While our candles are designed and poured to minimize this risk, we recommend never leaving a burning candle unattended, and stopping use when the wax is low (about 1/2 inch remaining) so the stones are not exposed to prolonged direct heat from the flame.
While It's Burning
How long should I burn my candle at one time?
We recommend burning your candle for no more than 4 hours at a stretch. Longer burns can cause the jar to overheat and may affect both the wax and the gemstones inside.
What surface should I place my candle on?
Always burn your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from drafts, curtains, and anything flammable. The glass jar will get warm during use — never place it directly on wood, plastic, or any surface that could be damaged by heat. A ceramic tile or a candle plate works great.
The flame looks too high — what should I do?
Extinguish the candle, let it cool completely, then trim the wick back to 1/4 inch before relighting. A tall or flickering flame is almost always caused by an untrimmed wick.
Can I burn my candle near children or pets?
Keep all candles out of reach of children and pets, and never leave a lit candle in an unattended room. Place your candle somewhere stable where it cannot be knocked over.
After the Wax Is Gone
What do I do with the gemstones once the candle is used up?
Once the wax has fully burned down and the jar has cooled completely, you can carefully remove the gemstones. Wipe them gently with a soft, dry cloth to remove any wax residue. From there, they're yours to keep — place them on a windowsill, carry one in your pocket, add them to a dish or tray, or incorporate them into your decor however feels right to you.
How do I clean out the jar?
Once the candle is finished and the jar is cool, pop it in the freezer for about 30 minutes. Any remaining wax will contract and lift away easily. Wash the jar with warm, soapy water — it makes a lovely small planter, pen cup, or storage jar.
Storage and General Handling
How should I store my candle when not in use?
Store your candle with the lid on (if it has one) in a cool, dry spot away from direct sunlight. Prolonged sun exposure can fade the wax color and affect the fragrance.
The top of my candle looks uneven or has a white coating — is that normal?
Yes! Natural soy wax can develop what's called frosting — a white, powdery appearance — or a slightly uneven top after burning. This is a characteristic of pure soy wax and does not affect the quality, scent, or safety of your candle.
